Funeral Arrangements

It is important to recognize that funerals are held to honor those who have passed and to comfort the living. The funeral process is an opportunity for the survivors and others who share the loss to express their love, respect, and grief. It acknowledges that a death has occurred, it memorializes the life that was lived, and it provides the family and friends the opportunity to pay tribute to their loved one. The family needs emotional support at this time, and the gathering of family and friends at the visitation and funeral ceremony provides that support. The funeral is an important part of the process by which the bereaved begin to adjust to a way of life that has been suddenly changed. It affords the family and friends the opportunity to take that first step toward healthy emotional adjustment to their loss.

Funeral arrangements include Funeral Home Selection, Disposition, Ceremonies, and Merchandise. After the family selects the funeral home, based on location, reputation, appearance, or family acquaintance, they make an appointment with the Funeral Director. At the beginning of the arrangement consultation, the funeral director will ask you some questions about the deceased. This information will be used to complete various documents, forms, permits, and newspaper obituaries.

During the funeral arrangements consultation, the Funeral Director will discuss disposition. The family could choose earth burial; entombment; cremation; direct disposition; whole-body donation; or eye, organ and tissue donation.

Along with any choice in disposition made by the family, they may choose the type of ceremony inkeeping with their religious beliefs, family traditions, or wishes. The ceremony takes into account one’s religion, fraternal and civic involvement, and emotional needs of the family. Visitation is an important part of the funeral process and it usually takes place at definite times prior to the funeral service. The funeral director will help the family with the choices for the viewing and the service. The funeral service may take place at the funeral home, at the family church, synagogue, or other location chosen by the family. If the family chooses cremation, they may choose to have a memorial service with or without a viewing at the funeral home or at a place of worship.

The funeral director will explain the many choices of merchandise the family may select. This may include the casket, a vault, an urn in the case of cremation, prayer cards, or other memorials. You can rely on the funeral director to assist you in making these decision based on your arrangements and budget.

When death occurs a distance from home, the funeral director will make all of the necessary arrangements associated with the transfer of the deceased back to his or her home for the funeral.

The funeral director will assist the family in planning a funeral that is designed specifically for their unique circumstances.
