Obituary for Daniel J. Flynn

DANIEL J. FLYNN, of Toms River Twp., NJ, passed away on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, NJ. Dan was born in the Bronx, New York, had resided in Kings Park, New York, and in Bayville, New Jersey, before settling in Toms River.
Dan’s career with New York Bell and Verizon in New York, New York, spanned 45 years as a manager before retiring. After retiring, Dan worked for the Lacey Twp. Board of Education as a school bus driver for 18 years.
Dan was a proud U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.
A great conversationalist, Dan could speak with anyone, even those he didn’t know. In addition, he was an avid New York Yankees fan, a holder of his amateur ham radio license, a boating enthusiast, and a Eucharistic Minister. Dan, along with his granddaughters, Brooke and Kaitlyn, recently traveled to Ireland to visit his ancestral homeland.
Dan was a Farmingdale State College graduate and furthered his education at St. John’s University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
He is pre-deceased by his parents, Patrick and Christina Flynn and his brother, Brian Flynn. Dan is survived by his beloved wife, Joan Luttrell-Flynn; his daughters, Patricia Trace and her husband, Steve, and Eileen Meador and her husband, Scott; his step-children, Michelle Hassler and her husband, Brian, John Luttrell and his wife, Rebecca, and Kimberly Vergona and her husband, Michael; his grandchildren, Nicholas, Connor & Madison Trace, Erin and Grace Meador, Kaitlyn and Jillian Hassler, Jack and Will Luttrell and Brooke and Brianna Vergona; his brother, Raymond Flynn and his wife, Ann Marie; his cousins, Gary Kendellen and his wife, Rosalind, James Goulding and his wife, Araceli, Ray Guinan and his wife, Maeve and Loretta Metcalf and her husband, Bruce and several other cousins in Ireland; his brother-in-law, Robert Knell and his wife, Michele; several nieces and nephews; and by his best friends, Mike and Liz Maloney.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his visitation on Sunday, June 4, 2023, from 2-6 PM at The GEORGE S. HASSLER FUNERAL HOME, 980 Bennetts Mills Road, Jackson Twp., NJ 08527. His visitation will be live streamed on the Hassler Funeral Home YouTube channel. A funeral gathering will be offered on Monday, June 5, 2023, at 9:00 AM at the funeral home. His Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10:30 AM at St. Mary of the Lake Roman Catholic Church, 43 Madison Ave., Lakewood Twp., NJ 08701. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Mary of the Lake Cemetery, 1 Honey Locust Dr., Lakewood Twp., NJ.
