Obituary for Julio Castellanos

JULIO CASTELLANOS was born on August 17, 1931, in Santurce, Puerto Rico. Julio was a proud Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps based in Camp Pendleton, CA and was awarded the Purple Heart during the Korean War.
Julio resided in Bronx, NY and Hoboken, NJ prior to settling in Jackson Township, NJ where he raised his family with wife Teresa Castellanos and six children. He was an Owner/Lease Operator of a transportation company for 27 years. He enjoyed being a member of the Knights of Columbus and was an avid Yankee and Jackson High School Wrestling fan. Upon retirement, Julio moved to Tampa, FL where he resided for 24 years with companion Luz Maria Mercado and was a parishioner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

Julio had a passion for his family and loved playing cards, pool, dominos, bowling, and dancing. His family quickly learned that he was the king of dominos and was impossible to beat. He was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit.

Julio was predeceased by his parents Jose Pillar Castellanos and Maria Mojica Castellanos; Teresa Vega Castellanos wife of 34 years; sister Carmen Castellanos and brothers Joseph and Carlos Castellanos. Julio is survived by his children Julio Castellanos and wife Catherine of Marietta, SC; Elizabeth and husband Ramon Lopez of Howell, NJ; Jo Ann and husband Jose Serrano of Howell, NJ; Annette and husband James Lanning of Fort Mill, SC; Edward Castellanos and fiancé Jennifer Shorba of Fort Myers, FL; Lizzette and husband Charles Higgins of Brick, NJ. Julio leaves Luz Maria Mercado his 30-year companion and her children, Nydia Pacheco of Jersey City, NJ and Zulma Mendez of Tampa, FL. Julio is survived by brother Jesus Castellanos of Tampa, FL; sister Julie Araujo of Bronx, NY; 16 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his visitation from 5-8 PM with his Funeral Service at 7 PM on Thursday, January 28, 2021, at the George S. Hassler Funeral Home, 980 Bennetts Mills Road, Jackson Township, NJ. A funeral gathering will be offered at 9:30 AM on Friday, January 29, 2021, at the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 350 Provinceline Rd., Arneytown, NJ 08562.
