Obituary for Peter L. Kohan, Jr.

PETER L. KOHAN, JR., Larry as he was known, 95, of Jackson Twp., NJ, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2020, at Ocean Medical Center, Brick Twp., NJ. He was born and raised in Clifton, NJ and resided in Wayne Twp. then Lakewood Twp., NJ, prior to settling in Jackson Twp.

Larry was a United States Veteran, proudly serving in the Navy and achieving the rank of Electricians Mate First Class (EMC1C). He was the recipient of the Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal (8 Stars), the Philippine Liberations Ribbon (2 Stars), and Unit Commendation. His ship, the USS Monssen (DD-798), saw extensive action in the Pacific Theater of WWII including the Battle of Leyte Gulf and was one of the few destroyers credited with the sinking of a Japanese battleship during a torpedo run.

He was the owner of Kohan Electric Inc., Wayne, NJ for 28 years, prior to his retirement in 1995.He was active with the Passaic County Electrical Contractors Association serving as association President from 1980-81 as well as with the New Jersey Independent Electrical Contractors Association.

Larry was predeceased by his parents, Peter L. Sr. and Marie Kohan; his sister Doris, brother Howard and by his wife, Helen in 2006. He is survived by his sons, Gary Kohan and his wife Gail of Howell Twp., NJ, and Bruce Kohan and his wife Darlene of West Milford, NJ; his grandchildren Ryan and his wife, Rebecca, Lauren and her husband, Michael, Shane and his companion, Jamie and Dylan and his companion, Lauren; his great grandson Graham; his great-grandson due August from Lauren; his sister, Patricia Verderame of Lakewood Twp.; and by his loving and most dedicated companion Jean Calello of Lakewood Twp.

Due to the CDC guidelines pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic, funeral arrangements are private and under the care of the GEORGE S. HASSLER FUNERAL HOME, 980 Bennetts Mills Rd., Jackson, NJ. His funeral liturgy will be offered at 12:00 PM on Friday, June 12, 2020 at The Church of St. Veronica, 4215 Route 9 North, Howell Twp., NJ.
