ARTHUR EDWARD NEWMAN, JR.., of Jackson Twp., NJ, passed away on Friday, June 2, 2017, at Care One in Jackson, NJ. He was 91.
Arthur was born in Newark in 1926 and raised in East Orange. He graduated from Sacred Heart Grammar School in East Orange and St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 after his Junior Year of High School, eventually completing his senior year in 1946 after serving in WWII.
At Saint Benedicts, he starred on both the football and basketball teams and played for legendary Hall of Fame basketball coach Ernest “Prof” Blood. Arthur attended Upsala College in East Orange from 1946-1948 and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University in New Brunswick in 1950. Later on he attended NYU.
Art began his professional career as Office Manager at Murphy Paint & Varnish, advanced to Sales Manager at Inmont Corporation and ultimately to Director of Purchasing at BASF, where he retired in 1989. While at BASF he and his purchasing team developed the first automotive rust proof coating system for which he won an award and was featured in Chemical Purchasing Week Magazine.
During his professional career he lived in Newark, Edison, Fanwood, and Wyckoff, NJ. Art and his family also lived in Hickory, North Carolina. After retirement he lived in Princeton, Mount Laurel, Allentown and Jackson, NJ. He enjoyed fishing, stained glass design, skiing, travel, golf, baseball and football. Art was a member of the Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus. He was a communicant of St. Aloysius Church in Jackson, NJ.
He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur Edward Newman, Sr. and Marie (nee Caffrey); his wife, also named Marie (nee Laciopa); and his sister, Bernice Dunbar. He is survived by his four children, Deborah Barberio (Stephen) of Columbus, NJ, Paul (Karen) of Tinton Falls, NJ, Gary (Rebecca) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Kevin (Danielle) of Acworth, GA; his 9 grandchildren; his 2 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his very dear friend, Madeline Ackerman.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his memorial gathering from 8:30 AM - 10 AM on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at the GEORGE S. HASSLER FUNERAL HOME, 980 Bennetts Mills Rd., Jackson Twp., NJ 08527. His Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10:30 AM at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, 935 Bennetts Mills Rd., Jackson Twp., NJ 08527. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you make a donation to your favorite charity in Arthur’s name.
