Obituary for Mary Mangan (Scallan)

Mary Mangan (Scallan)
MARY MARGARET SCALLAN MANGAN passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on April 9, 2017. She was born on November 16, 1932, in Kilmore Quay, County Wexford, Ireland.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, Timothy Mangan, Jr.; and her loving children, Sharon and her husband Bruce Schroeder of Greenville, NC, Patrick and his husband Vasile of Asbury Park, NJ, and Kevin and his wife Cindy of Oceanside, NY.
She was blessed with 4 wonderful grandsons, Brian and Michael Schroeder and Colin and Connor Mangan. Mary is also survived by her 3 sisters, Greta Organ, Eileen Byrne and Chrissy Kelly; and by her 3 brothers, Marty, Frank, and Lawrence Scallan.
Mary grew up in a small fishing village in County Wexford, Ireland. She was one of 12 children born to Lawrence and Annie Monaghan Scallan. She left home at the age of 17 to move to Dublin to pursue her passion to become a nurse and help others. She then moved to Toronto, CA, at the age of 29 and met the love of her life, Timothy. They made their first home in NYC and then moved to Long Beach, NY, in 1968 where she lived until retiring to Jackson, NJ, in 1996. She devoted herself to God, work, and family – raising three successful children. In her spare time, Mary enjoyed painting, ceramics and making floral arrangements. She gained even more pleasure in giving these away than in making them.
She will be sorely missed by all but has rightly earned a spot in heaven and will continue to watch over us all and be a part of our lives.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her visitation on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, from 4-7 PM at the George S. Hassler Funeral Home, 980 Bennetts Mills Rd., Jackson Twp., NJ 08527. A funeral gathering will be offered on Wednesday, April 12, 2107 at 9:30 AM at the funeral home. Her Funeral Liturgy will follow at 10:30 AM at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, 935 Bennetts Mills Rd., Jackson, NJ. Interment to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, 1 Honey Locust Dr., Lakewood, NJ. Contributions may be made in Mary’s memory to the American Cancer Society, 2310 Route 34 Suite 1D, Manasquan, NJ 08736 www.cancer .org.
